Water Contamination and Water Adulteration

The very basic need for human existence is water. Water is an indispensable natural resource and is a bare essential to perform our daily tasks.

According to report by the United Nations, 90% of wastewater discharged in developing countries is left untreated everyday. Over 3 million people around the world die each year by drinking water which is considered unfit for human consumption.

Water pollution is any contamination of water with chemicals or other foreign substances that are detrimental to human, plant, or animal health.

These pollutants include fertilizers and pesticides from agricultural runoff; sewage and food processing waste; lead, mercury, and other heavy metals; chemical wastes from industrial discharges; and chemical contamination from hazardous waste sites.

Worldwide, nearly 2 billion people drink contaminated water that could be harmful to their health.

Water purification is one of the solutions for water pollution. Millions of people worldwide could be saved if people used chlorination, filtration, and solar disinfection to treat water at their homes.

37.7 million Indians are affected by waterborne diseases each year. Water contamination in India is mainly contributed by untreated sewerage which contaminates surface as well as ground water.

Indian rivers like Yamuna, Ganga, Gomti, Ghaggar, Chambal flow through highly populated cities and get polluted due to the industries they cross. It found that tap water may contain toxics like mercury.

With the increase in the literacy rate, more Indians are becoming aware of consuming safe drinking water. Now, lot of care is taken by the Indians for the drinking water. Most of Indian now prefers bottled water over using tap water as they are aware that the tap water may be contaminated by chemicals, microbes, pathogens, sanitation issues etc.

But, it is found that bottled water or mineral water also adulterated it can be spurious.

Many times Authorities pick up samples of mineral water and find them contaminated with microbes and toxics.

People now become aware that bottled water can be adulterated too. By consuming bottled water from non reliable outlet is like that we are paying for the adulterated water and helping in the growth of spurious business of adulterated water.

It becomes essential for us to consume quality marked bottled water which is processed at water plants using aseptic filling technologies ensuring delivery of safe drinking water.

An Urgent Call for Action: Undernourished Children of INDIA

Over the last 10 years, India witnessed a rapid and robust growth, which enabled millions of people to escape poverty. India, however, still remains one of the most undernourished countries in the world. Indias 2005 National Family Health Survey -3 (NFHS) found 46% of children below the age of 3 years were underweight and 38% were stunted. The survey findings highlight that neither economic growth nor food security is likely to be sufficient to lower the prevalence of malnutrition. Factors such as appropriate infant and young child feeding, hygiene and sanitation, prevention and treatment of illnesses and status of women are critical.

Five family members were swept in Patalpani area of Indore by a flash flood. (Madhya Pradesh, India)

Three members of a family were drowned as flash flood caused a sudden flow of water in the Patalpani waterfall near Indore. A tragedy for this family, as resulted - the father and 2 girls died while the 2 boys are alive.

This unfortunate incident took place in Madhya Pradesh, India. Five persons got caught in the rising waters of a flash flood. They lost their footing and got swept over the waterfall. As per last available reports two were saved, one dead body was retrieved and the remaining two were missing. Local people had warned the tourists against sitting in the risky areas of the stream to which some seem to have paid no heed.

Local team searched them farther downstream. Only two bodies recovered were found as far as away from it. Two boys survived the flooding.

Several agencies have try to find the missing individuals.

Note :

  • 1) The National Guard should be called in to help with recovery and clean up in any such incidence.
  • 2) It is always unbelievable and something you never expect to see or have to deal with during flood or waterfall area. So always be careful in waterfall region.

Consideration :

  • 1) Getting thrown into rough waters like that is the scariest thing, even with a life jacket on.
  • 2) They could have made it if they moved faster. If you see water rapidly rising, you need to act fast!.

If they would have just stayed in that one spot and waited it out they would have made it.

This was an act of God and something that we can not control.

10-hour power cuts in Gurgaon, Millenium City

For the last two months, electricity supply in Gurgaon has been hit badly, and long hours of power cuts are the norm. Gurgaon demands 1000 MW power every day, but is getting just 700 MW per day, leaving the city powerless for 8 to 12 hours every day. No power means no water and leaving the Millennium City not only in the dark but grappling with one of its worst ever water crisis.
